Children’s-Adults’ Design or How to Use Kids’ Paintings

We've got tons of Arseny's gouache paintings. Till some time I'd put them into a folder hoping that I'd get some idea of how to use such beautiful material in design :) . Just to keep "for memory" is not interesting as everything important and marking some landmark has been already photographed and we are not inclined to creating archives.

It seems, we finally got an interesting idea – see for yourself:

This panel-picture is made of CD covers and Arseny's gouache paintings.

This example just illustrates the technology of using children's paintings for the interior design but one can find lot's of ways to use this idea Читать дальше…

Land Art as an Art for Kids. Interview with Richard Shilling

Have you ever heard of such kind of art as Land Art

What is Land Art?

It involves making art and sculptures using materials you find in nature, such as leaves, fir cones, twigs, pebbles, rocks, sand and shells. Usually, sculptures are not placed in the landscape, rather, the landscape is the means of their creation.

Land Art. Richard Shilling

Endless Knot

How is Land Art connected to the subject of Parents’ Ideas?

Land Art can add so much fun, beauty and positive emotions into the process of the child's upbringing. Moreover, it can unite children and adults when they create "as equals" contributing to each others' ideas and learning from each other and from nature.

Land Art. Richard Shilling

Floating Leaf Boat

When creating art and sculptures among nature both children and adults:

  • notice the beauty of "usual" things such as, for example, leaves covered with hoarfrost, icicles illuminated by the sun rays, stones on the beach, etc;
  • use their imagination, get some fresh air and learn all about nature and cycles of life;
  • play and explore at the same time.

Today we are very honoured to introduce you Richard Shilling, an English land artist, sculptor, photographer and film-maker who has recently published the first of a series of Land Art for Kids books in partnership with Julia Brooklyn.

Homemade Table Theatre – together with a 2-yr-old

When being with a child, an opportunity to create a whole world from nothing during some 5 minutes always attracted me. Parents' Ideas has already described one of the means of how to do it (Play Drawing with Children, or Escher in a Children's Manner).

And one of these days Arseny and I created a whole world again a table theatre stage – spontaneously using only scissors and colour cardboard. It was Arseny (a boy of 2) who suggested the idea of how to make it.

It should be mentioned that Arseny's main passion is cars and the most popular situations in his games are when a car faces an accident, it is broken and needs immediate fixing. But he does not fix his cars just anywhere, the car needs a car service station! (thanks to the book about an unforgettable mole).

So, during our games I often suggest: Читать дальше…

Painting with Children using a Brush: Interesting Techniques

Notwithstanding the fact that painting with hands is more attractive for Soniya than any other methods of painting (tactile senses :) ), we do not avoid using a brush from time to time. And to make the art process last longer we have been applying interesting techniques for painting with a brush as well. (Soniya is currently 23 mo old).

Painting with Children: wax, watercolour and a brush

The mummy is drawing some image with a brush on a sheet of paper and then suggests her little one that she should find "who has hidden there". Soniya is spreading colour on paper with a brush and happily informs me who lives on it.

What to Give Children Who Do Not Have Mothers?

One of our friends knowing that we often make some art and crafts with our toddlers told us about her friend who, taking care of her recently born daughter, also finds time and strength to visit a children's home and hold craft classes there. We were impressed! And, of course, we decided to get acquainted with Elena, a young mother from Moscow, Russia.

Elena, volunteers, visits to a children's home

Parent's Ideas: Elena, how did the idea to teach crafts to kids in the children's home occur to you taking into consideration the fact that your daughter was very very little?

Elena: Eleven months ago our daughter Kira arrived at our family. This event meant the beginning of a new life for us, the life full of incredible love, enormous responsibility and many beautiful moments. Taking care of our child I was thinking about the children who do not have mothers. My heart ached: my child is lying beside me, it is warm and comfortable for her and somewhere there are children who are alone and they suffer without their mums. First I tried to ignore these thoughts but they did not want to go away. And one evening, having put the baby to bed, I started looking for the information how one can help children living in children's home in the Internet. I consider it to be a miracle that in just a couple of minutes Читать дальше…

Painting with Children: from wet wipes to shaving foam

Soniya (22 mo) is painting with finger paints almost every day.

painting with kids

And for some time already I've felt that some new painting technique should be introduced into our painting for the mum child not to get bored. So, once again we are taking out the finger paints…

Painting with children: wipes and threads

We painted as usual: with fingers, palms, balls. Nothing special until we decided that it was enough for that day!.. And here came an idea! The wipe Читать дальше…

Easter Eggs: Kinds of Decoration

Not only Soniya (22 mo) but also I, her mum, was decorating Easter eggs for the first time in her/my life. And here is what we've got:

Easter eggs

Both eggs were boiled before being decorated but another way could be the following: to pour the content of the eggs out through a little hole and use the shell for decoration (thus, the eggs could have a longer life).

Painting Art for Toddlers: A Gallery of Hand Paintings

It seems each mum loves keeping imprints of her child's hands (and feet, if possible). And how many beautiful compositions, interesting images can be made with hand and foot imprints! And in some 10+ years your grown-up baby will look through these pictures with much interest…

In the part of our blog which is in Russian we asked our readers to send us the pictures they have painted together with their kids using hand and foot imprints. And here are their and our ideas. Hope you'll enjoy!
